Bank Transfer vs Transfer App: The Real Cost Difference, With Numbers

Guides · October 23, 2026 · 10 min read · By GlobalFxcc Data Desk · Data checked 1 November 2026

Short answer: on a USD 1,000 international transfer, a bank wire commonly costs 5%–9% once the flat fee, the intermediary bank deduction and the FX margin are counted. A transfer app usually costs 0.7%–2%. The gap is a receiving-bank charge plus a rate markup, not a mystery.

The four cost layers nobody adds up

LayerBank wireTransfer app
Outgoing flat feeUSD 20 – 45USD 0 – 5
Intermediary/correspondent deductionUSD 5 – 25 deducted in transitNone visible (networks are direct)
Receiving bank chargeOften USD 5 – 20 taken from the amountUsually zero on local rails
FX margin1.5% – 3%0.4% – 2%

Apps do not pay fewer costs — they route through local clearing and pay-in networks, so the same transfer skips two of the four layers.

Worked example: USD 1,000 to Pakistan

Mid-market rate 1 USD = 276.78 PKR (snapshot when this guide was updated). Nothing here is a quote — it is the arithmetic of each channel:

StepBank wireTransfer app
SendUSD 1,000USD 1,000
Outgoing fee− USD 35− USD 4.99
Intermediary + receiving charges− USD 20− USD 0
Rate applied271.24 (2% margin)276.78 (0% margin)
Net recipient gets≈ 256,000 PKR≈ 275,390 PKR
All-in cost≈ 7.5%≈ 0.5%

That is roughly 19,400 PKR of difference on a single transfer — the cost of a month's utilities. Benchmark against USD to PKR and GBP to PKR to see how the gap scales.

What SHA, OUR and BEN actually mean

Usually set by the sender's bank, occasionally by the sender under instruction:

If you must use a bank, choosing OUR makes the cost visible instead of silently shrinking the transfer.
