There is no single "dollar rate" in Pakistan. There are three numbers in circulation, and they can differ by 1–3%:
Our USD to PKR page publishes the mid-market rate — the midpoint between wholesale buy and sell — plus a 30-day history so you can see where today sits inside the recent range. For the inverse direction use PKR to USD.
Because they serve different buyers. The interbank market clears large, documented, electronic flows. The open market clears physical cash demand. When cash demand spikes, the open market rate gets more expensive (more rupees per dollar) and the gap widens. Historically that gap has ranged from a few paisa to several rupees during stress.
| What you need | Which market applies | Typical spread vs mid-market |
|---|---|---|
| Remittance to a bank account | Interbank-based (bank or exchange company) | 0.5% – 2.5% |
| Cash rupees in hand | Open market / exchange counter | 0.5% – 3% (wider in stress) |
| Debit card spend abroad | Card scheme rate + bank markup | 1.5% – 4% |
| Airport counter | Retail kiosk | 5% – 12% (worst option) |
Spread ranges are industry norms, not promises — and they move with market conditions. The point is that the channel you choose determines the rate band you are exposed to before you even compare providers.
Formal-channel remittances (bank to bank, exchange company to bank, app to bank) settle off the interbank-based side of the market, which is exactly why the State Bank of Pakistan pushes senders to use banking channels: recipients get a defensible rate and the transfer is traceable. Pakistan receives roughly USD 30 billion a year in officially recorded remittances (State Bank of Pakistan data), which is why these flows move the rupee so visibly.
If you are sending from the UK, the mechanics are the same but the funding leg is GBP — see GBP to PKR. From the Gulf, most salary remittances are SAR or AED funded: SAR to PKR and AED to PKR.
Worked example using a mid-market rate of 1 USD = 276.78 PKR (the rate on our snapshot when this guide was last updated). The math is what matters, not the specific fee values:
| Channel | Fixed fee | Rate margin | PKR received on USD 500 | All-in cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Online app (bank payout) | USD 4.99 | 0.6% | ~136,900 | ~1.6% |
| Exchange company | USD 0 – 5 | 1.2% | ~136,080 | ~1.2% – 2.2% |
| Your bank (wire) | USD 25 – 40 | 1.5% – 3% | ~131,000 – 134,800 | ~6% – 10% |
| Cash to an agent | 0 (quoted in rate) | 2% – 3% | ~134,000 – 135,700 | ~2% – 3% |
Notice the pattern: the channel with the smallest fixed fee is not automatically the cheapest. The zero-fee trap explains why in detail. A full channel breakdown is in our cheapest way to send money to Pakistan guide, and the generic cost framework lives on transfer rates.
Timing helps at the margin; it does not beat a bad rate. Three patterns are worth knowing:
| Amount sent | Rate 276.78 | Rate 3% worse (268.48) | Money lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD 200 | 55,356 PKR | 53,696 PKR | 1,660 PKR |
| USD 1,000 | 276,780 PKR | 268,480 PKR | 8,300 PKR |
| USD 5,000 | 1,383,900 PKR | 1,342,400 PKR | 41,500 PKR |
That is why reading a 30-day range beats watching the daily headline. The method is described in how to read a 30-day exchange rate chart.
Personal inward remittances are not taxed in the hands of the recipient as income — that is the whole design of the incentive structure that keeps money in banking channels. Outward transfers, business payments and property purchases have separate rules, and rules change with each budget. For anything beyond family support, confirm the current position with your bank or a tax adviser rather than relying on a website.
A Roshan Digital Account lets non-resident Pakistanis open a Pakistani bank account remotely and move money into it formally. It does not give you a special exchange rate — the conversion still happens at the interbank-based rate — but it does reduce friction, and for larger sums it makes the audit trail clean for both sides.
Do not compare fees. Compare implied rates:
If a provider offers "zero fees" but delivers 268.5 PKR per USD while the mid-market rate is 276.78, the margin is about 3.0% — you paid roughly USD 15 hidden inside the rate on a USD 500 transfer.
No for typical family support amounts — the sender's provider handles compliance, and in most sending countries there is no reporting duty on a few hundred dollars. Regulated providers are required to verify identity (and sometimes the source of funds) on larger or repeat transfers, which is normal and not a reason to avoid them.
Because they refresh on different schedules and hedge differently. Some poll a data feed every few minutes, others lock a rate for a window, and some price in a buffer for weekend or after-hours delivery. A rate that looks worse today can be better tomorrow — which is exactly what the 30-day table is for.
