GBP to PKR: What UK Senders Really Pay in Fees and Margin

Short answer: UK banks typically cost 4%–10% all-in on a GBP to PKR transfer once you add the flat fee and the rate markup. FCA-regulated online providers usually land between 0.7% and 2.5%. On GBP 2,000 that gap is worth GBP 60–150 per transfer.

How much is 1 GBP in PKR today?

Our GBP to PKR page shows the mid-market rate plus a 30-day history table. Use the mid-market number as your benchmark: UK providers are required to be transparent, but "transparent" does not mean free — most quote a rate slightly below mid-market and call the difference "no commission".

What does a UK sender actually pay?

Provider typeTypical flat feeTypical rate marginAll-in cost on GBP 2,000
Online provider (bank payout)GBP 0 – 30.4% – 1.5%GBP 8 – 33
Online provider (cash pickup)GBP 2 – 61% – 2%GBP 22 – 46
High-street bankGBP 10 – 251.5% – 3.5%GBP 40 – 95
Post office / agent counterGBP 4 – 82% – 4%GBP 44 – 88

These are industry ranges, not quotes from named companies — margins move with volatility. The important habit is comparing the final PKR amount for the same GBP amount on the same day, which is the only number that captures fee plus margin together.

Why is the pound so much stronger than the rupee?

GBP/PKR is really two stories stacked on top of each other: GBP/USD and USD/PKR. The pound moves on UK rate expectations, inflation and growth data; the rupee moves on Pakistan's current account, remittance inflows and central-bank policy. That is why GBP/PKR can jump 2% in a week without either country changing its interest rate. If you want to see the halves separately, check GBP to USD and USD to PKR.

Does the UK tax money I send to family?

Gifts are not taxed as income for the sender in the UK, and the recipient does not pay UK tax on a gift received. The one nuance worth knowing is inheritance tax: most outright gifts fall outside your estate if you survive seven years after making them, with smaller annual allowances available. For anything substantial or recurring, take regulated tax advice — rules are specific to your circumstances.

What checks will a UK provider run on me?

Any FCA-authorised firm must verify your identity and, beyond certain thresholds or patterns, the source of funds. Expect to upload photo ID and sometimes proof of address or a payslip on your first transfer or on unusually large amounts. You can confirm a firm's authorisation on the FCA register before sending — a useful habit that takes 30 seconds and eliminates most remittance fraud.

How do I calculate the margin my provider is charging?

Two steps, no spreadsheet needed:

Example: mid-market is 370.52 PKR per GBP; a provider delivers 366.80 on a GBP 1,000 transfer. Margin = (370.52 − 366.80) ÷ 370.52 = 1.0% — about GBP 10. If it had delivered 359.40, the margin would be 3.0% — GBP 30. Same fee page, three times the cost.

Cash pickup or bank deposit?

Bank deposit is usually cheaper and safer; cash pickup costs more because the provider carries the liquidity and theft risk of physical rupees. If the recipient has no bank account, use a licensed exchange company rather than an informal hawala-style agent: you get a receipt, a defensible rate and legal recourse. The channel comparison walks through the trade-offs.
