Cheapest Way to Send Money to Pakistan: Channel-by-Channel Cost Table

Short answer: for most senders the cheapest realistic combination is a licensed online provider or exchange-house app paying out to a Pakistani bank account — typically 0.7%–2% all-in. Banks are 4%–10%. Cash agents sit in between and are the hardest to verify.

What "cheapest" actually means

Three costs stack up on every transfer, and only the first is advertised:

All-in cost % = (mid-market value − value actually delivered) ÷ mid-market value × 100. That single formula settles every argument about which channel is cheapest.

Channel comparison on PKR corridors

Worked example at mid-market rates of 1 USD = 276.78 PKR and 1 GBP = 370.52 PKR (snapshot when this guide was updated). "All-in" assumes the typical ranges in column three:

ChannelTypical all-in costSpeedBest for
Licensed online provider (bank payout)0.7% – 2%Minutes to 1 business dayRegular monthly transfers
Exchange-house app (Gulf senders)0.5% – 1.5%Minutes to hoursSalary remittances from SAR/AED
High-street bank wire4% – 10%1 – 5 business daysOnly if a provider requires it
Cash agent / counter1.5% – 3%Same dayRecipient with no bank account
Debit/credit card spend in Pakistan2.5% – 4.5%InstantSmall, occasional payments

Does the amount change the ranking?

Amount (USD)Online provider at 1%Exchange house at 0.8%Bank at 6%
10027,401 PKR27,456 PKR26,017 PKR
500137,006 PKR137,283 PKR130,087 PKR
2,000548,024 PKR549,132 PKR520,347 PKR

The ranking barely changes with size; the penalty for using the wrong channel does. On USD 2,000, choosing a bank over an exchange house costs roughly 28,700 PKR — a month of school fees.

What about cash dollars carried in hand?

Open-market cash usually beats a bank wire but loses to a good app, and it exposes you to spread risk plus the risk of carrying cash. If you must use cash, exchange at a licensed exchange company in a commercial area, count in front of the counter, and keep the receipt. The USD to PKR page gives you the mid-market rate to benchmark against before you go.

Timing that actually helps

Send 3–5 days before Gulf month-end to avoid the salary crush; avoid the weekend (markets are closed and margins widen); and for large one-off amounts, check the 30-day range so you are not locking in at the top of the week's band. The method is in how to read a 30-day chart.
