Sending Money from Europe to Asia and Africa: SEPA, IBAN and the Real Cost (2026)

Short answer: a euro SEPA transfer inside Europe is usually free or costs a few cents, but that is only the first leg. The moment the money is converted into PKR, PHP, NGN or INR, a second cost appears inside the exchange rate. On a EUR 500 transfer the difference between a good and a poor provider is roughly EUR 25-30 - even when both advertise "low fees".

1. What SEPA actually covers (and what it does not)

SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) covers 36 countries: the 27 EU members plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, the UK, Monaco, San Marino, Andorra and Vatican City. A SEPA credit transfer is a euro payment. Banks in the area must charge the same for a cross-border euro SEPA transfer as they charge for a domestic euro transfer.

That rule is about the fee, not the exchange rate. SEPA does not convert currency. If the recipient needs rupees, pesos, naira or dirhams, a bank or provider converts the euro - and that conversion carries a margin. This is why a "free SEPA transfer" can still cost 2-4% of the amount.

2. The three costs inside a European transfer

Every transfer has up to three cost layers. Comparing only the first one is the most common mistake.

  1. Fixed fee - what the provider charges to send. Ranges from EUR 0 to EUR 40.
  2. Exchange-rate margin - the gap between the mid-market rate and the rate you are given. Usually 0.4-3.5%.
  3. Payout fee - charged by the receiving bank or cash agent. Often zero to the sender, sometimes deducted from the amount.

Here is the same EUR 500 to Pakistan priced three ways at a mid-market rate of 309.84 PKR per EUR (mid-market value on 3 November 2026; check the live EUR to PKR page for today):

Typical online providerEUR 52.0%150,305-3.0%
High-street bank (SEPA + conversion)EUR 153.0%145,766-5.9%

The mid-market value of EUR 500 is 154,921 PKR. The best channel keeps 99.2% of it; the bank keeps 94.1%. That is a difference of 7,916 PKR - about EUR 25 - on a single transfer.

At EUR 2,000 the fixed fee matters less and the margin matters more: 614,729 PKR versus 596,588 PKR, a gap of 18,141 PKR. Large transfers are won or lost on the rate, not the fee.

4. Which channel wins at which amount

There is no single cheapest provider - the answer depends on the amount and the payout method.

5. Timing: when European transfers are cheapest

Rates move continuously, but European transfers have practical cut-off effects:

Use the 30-day range on the pair page to see whether today is in the top or bottom half of the month. Method: how to read a 30-day rate chart.

6. A five-point checklist before you send

  1. Get the final amount the recipient will receive, in local currency, in writing.
  2. Divide by the amount you send to get the implied rate.
  3. Compare with the mid-market rate on the pair page. A gap under 1% is competitive; over 2.5% is expensive.
  4. Check the payout rail - bank account, wallet or cash - and its limits.
  5. Verify the provider's licence in your country and the recipient's country before sending large amounts.
