| Currency | Regime | Who sets the tone | Typical daily move |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNY (yuan) | Managed float, +/-2% band around a daily fixing | People's Bank of China, trade flows, capital controls | Small - the fixing anchors it |
| JPY (yen) | Free float, occasional official intervention | Bank of Japan policy, US-Japan rate gap, safe-haven flows | Moderate to large |
| KRW (won) | Free float | Bank of Korea, exports, foreign portfolio flows, risk appetite | Moderate, spikes in stress |
Current mid-market levels on 3 November 2026: USD/JPY 157.90, USD/CNY 6.67, USD/KRW 1,344.13. Live pages: USD to JPY, USD to CNY, USD to KRW.
The PBOC publishes a daily reference rate each morning in Beijing. The onshore rate can trade within a 2% band around that fixing, so the fixing is the single most important number of the day. Around it, three forces matter:
Practical effect for senders: CNY crosses often gap at the Beijing fixing (around 09:15 local time) rather than moving smoothly through the day. If you are sending from China, the fixing can matter more than the hour you press send.
The yen is the cleanest free float in the group, and the dominant driver is the US-Japan interest-rate gap. When US yields rise faster than Japanese yields, money moves out of yen and USD/JPY rises. When the gap narrows - because the Bank of Japan hikes or the Fed cuts - the yen usually strengthens.
For a sender in Japan, USD/JPY is only half the story. What matters is JPY to PHP or JPY to VND - the yen's move against the dollar plus the peso's or dong's own move.
The won is a free float with a strong cyclical character. It typically weakens when global investors sell risk assets and strengthens when semiconductor exports and foreign equity inflows are strong.
For senders in Korea, the practical pair is KRW to PHP or KRW to VND. USD/KRW sets the direction; the provider's margin sets the cost.
These are worked examples at mid-market rates on 3 November 2026: JPY/PHP 0.4017, KRW/PHP 0.0472, CNY/PHP 9.5097. A "good" provider here means a 0.8-1% margin and a small fee; a "poor" one means a 2.5% margin and a larger fee.
| Send | Mid-market value | Good provider | Poor provider | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| JPY 50,000 to PHP | 20,085 PHP | 19,685 PHP | 19,270 PHP | 415 PHP (2.1%) |
| KRW 500,000 to PHP | 23,600 PHP | 23,271 PHP | 22,780 PHP | 491 PHP (2.1%) |
| CNY 5,000 to PHP | 47,549 PHP | 46,885 PHP | 46,082 PHP | 803 PHP (1.7%) |
The pattern is consistent: on a typical monthly transfer, the gap between a good and a poor provider is about 1.5-2.5% of the amount. On JPY 50,000 that is roughly one week of groceries in the Philippines. Over a year, it is more than a month's worth of transfers.
